Physical education colleges demand being absorbed under ministry of higher education

Teachers of the physical education college here demanded the deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar absorb eight aided physical education institutions across the state in the ministry of higher education.

In a memorandum submitted to Pawar recently, Pradeep Dube, principal of the MPS Mandal's College of Physical Education, Aurangabad, said that all these institutions impart post graduate training in 'bachelor of physical education'. Any graduate is entitled to take admission to this course and the institutions have to follow all the University Grants Commission norms and the Maharashtra University act. These colleges are affiliated to universities in Mumbai, Pune, Amravati, Aurangabad and Nagpur. Entire staff had to be recruited according the UGC norms and the university rules and they get UGC approval too.

Dube said that state government has placed the B Ed colleges under the purview of the department of higher education while the B P Ed colleges have been placed under the purview of school education and sports department, which is illogical. He also pointed out that since the B P Ed is governed by the school education department, the UGC doesn't provide salary grant for these institutions. Thus the government has to bear the burden for B B Ed institutions. If the B P Ed colleges were placed under the purview of higher education department, these colleges would be entitled to get 80 per cent of the salary grant from the UGC thus reducing the burden on state government by at least Rs 100 crore annually,' he added.
