Industry-wide efforts are needed to localise broadband technologies to make high-speed Internet networks successful and affordable in the country , a telecom industry official told.

RIL's Executive VP and Chief technology Officer Anuj Jain said, "We need localisation of entire technology. If we keep importing ... paying a big money, we will not be able to survive."

"If we have this vision that GPON (high speed broadband network) should be made successful, it has to be industry wide effort to make it localise to make it affordable," he said at a seminar here.

Reliance Industries' owned Infotel Broadband Services plans to roll out 4G broadband services across the country.

As per government's estimates, in absence of domestic hardware industry, country's import bill for technology products will surpass oil import bill by 2020.
