Updated on: Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Mumbai: Educational Testing Service (ETS) today announced the introduction of their TOEFL® India Scholar Programme. The TOEFL® India Scholar Programme includes three $10,000 scholarships for the UK, US, and Canada and four $5000 scholarships to any of these three countries. Students taking admissions in postgraduate education programmes in 2010 are be eligible to be a part of this programme.

The finalists for this scholarship programme will be chosen by ETS’s expert panel on the basis of their TOEFL scores, academic records, outstanding extracurricular activities, analytical skills and innovative ideas.

An integral part of the application procedure is a 2000 word essay on the following topic:

Since Independence it has been India’s dream to ensure all children are enrolled in primary schools. However, drop-out levels are high despite all efforts. What new initiative would you recommend to ensure minimal schooling, and how would you implement it? Explain why your recommended initiative will be perceived as relevant by Indian society and why it will be effective.

The essay will be judged on the student’s thoughtful analysis and clear expression of the social, economic and political environment of the country and the initiative recommended. The winners, to whom the scholarships will be awarded, will be chosen on the basis of personal interviews.

“Indian schools are filled with students who are brimming with potential, who can go far, if given the opportunity. We are delighted to be able to give these deserving students the opportunity to realize this immense potential,” says Dr Philip Tabbiner, General Manager, Business Development, Partnerships and Global for ETS.
