TN governor urges voluntary organisations to play a pivotal role in womwns education

Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah urged voluntary service organisations to play a pivotal role in creating awareness on women's education as women's empowerment leads to development of society, the state and nation as a whole.

"Voluntary Service Organisations should play a pivotal role. They should join hands with government, district administrations and educational institutions in creating awareness on the need for women education", he said at a function here.

Noting that economic, cultural, social divide and other constraints on women's education has to be removed,he said the Nation needs more women to take up science and research.

"We need more and more women to join the mainstream in building up of our nation", he said, at the Annual Day celebrations of Women's Voluntary Service held at Raj Bhavan.

"Improved access to education, making girl children of rural villages in particular take to education and to check dropouts of girl students at higher education are needed", he said.

Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was also All India Director General of Women's Voluntary Service had inaugurated the Tamil Nadu chapter in 1972.

The Tamil Nadu chapter has so far executed Rs 3.78 crore worth of projects benefiting 2.29 lakh people, the Governor said.
