New block at IIT Delhi

Updated on: Tuesday, August 25, 2009

New Delhi: A new academic block would be soon erected in the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) to accommodate the rising number of students at the apex institute.

The six-storey block will have state-of-the-art lecture halls with a capacity of accommodating 250 students. The construction work is expected to begin by the end of September.

With the implementation of OBC reservation last year, classes at IIT Delhi have been running to a 'packed house.' Of the total 27 per cent OBC quota, 9 per cent quota was implemented each in 2008-09 and 2009-10 session.

Owing to this, the size of each batch has become too large to be seated in one room. The faculty had to divide the batch into small sizes to make it convenient. The new block is being set up to ease the pressure on the existing infrastructure and faculty as well.
