TN government targets to provide skill development training to 5 lakh youths

Tamil Nadu Government has targetted to provide Skill Development Training as per the requirement of Industries, for five lakh youths this year, a top offficial has said.

Project Director (Employment and Training) G.Prakash, who inaugurated a seminar of the IT Department,on behalf of ICT Academy,here, said there was need to train fresh graduates to improve their skills to get jobs.

"In developed countries like U.S. 96 per cent of the students are fit enough to join work after graduation. Even in Singapore 65 per cent of the students can join job immediately after graduation," he said.

In India only five to ten per cent were fully equipped to be employed directly after graduation.

"Unskilled or semi-skilled labour force or workforce would affect productivity by 20 to 50 per cent.India had a rich treasure of 45 crore youths,and it was necessary to make them a skilled workforce," he said.

Steps were being taken to provide them skill at their colleges or Polytechnics or even Industrial Training institutes.The country would require 15-Crore fitters,welders, plumbers,masons,drivers by 2020,he said.

The government had framed 1500 different types of skill training programmes,spreading from 60 hrs to 500 hrs.

By 2023,government planned to train two crore youths in skill development and provide them gainful employment and better livelihood.

Colleges interested in providing skill development training could register themselves as Technical training institutes.Certificates for students undergoing such courses would be given jointly by central and state governments. The programme was open to technical institutes,arts and science colleges, a release said.
