The Rajasthan government has decided to provide bicycles to school girls staying in hostels in tribal areas of the state, an official said.

B K Meena Principal Secretary, Tribal Area Development, said, initially, about 100 cycles will be made available in hostels for tribal girls studying in class 6 to 8.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Tribal Area Development Minister Mahendrajeet Singh, he added.

"This will help the girls to cover the distance from their hostels to schools," Meena said, adding that the government was planning to provide personal cycles to 193 girls in Class 9 to 12 who are living in hostels in these areas.

The facility will be made available to girls who are studying in schools which are atleast three kms away from their respective hostels.

The issue of lack of transport to commute between hostel and school was raised by school girls during a recent visit of state Governor Margaret Alva to tribal areas in Udaipur in July, following which the decision has been taken.
