Maritime graduate and higher courses should have the twin approval of AICTE and Director-General of Shipping

All India Council for Technical Education chairman S.S. Mantha has clarified that all maritime graduate and higher courses should have the twin approval of AICTE and Director-General of Shipping.

Without them, students would not qualify for higher studies and jobs, he said. The clarification was sought in the light of claims that DG-Shipping approval alone was necessary for B.Tech, MBA and other marine courses.

AICTE member-secretary Kuncheria P. Isaac said: “But courses directly run by universities have ex-emptions, granted by SC in Bharatidasan case.

However, universities do not affiliate technical colleges or courses without AICTE approval.” The same rule applied to Maritime.

AICTE was lenient in the case of certificate courses as opposed to diploma, degree and PG courses, he said.
