Chennai: IITs have decided to conduct multiple rounds of counselling for seats going vacant in the first round of counselling.

A meeting of the directors of all Indian Institute of Technology took place in the city on Sunday to decide the modalities of conducting the joint entrance examination for next academic year (2010-11).

Prof Gautam Barua, director, IIT Guwahati said, 'As IIT-Madras would be the coordinating agency for conducting joint entrance examination (JEE) for 2010-11 academic year, we (directors) discussed the modalities of conducting the exam in a better way.'

Pointing out that there may not be any major change in the joint entrance examination for the next academic year, Prof Barua said that they decided to continue multiple rounds of counselling next academic year also.

'In the past we had no mechanism to fill seats that went vacant in the first round of counselling, however this year we tried to conduct second round of counselling to fill up those unfilled sets but it never went as expected. Hence we have decided to continue this system for the coming years also and we hope that it works well,' he said.

As there were representations from various quarters for revamping the JEE system, Prof Barua said that during the meeting the directors emphasised the need for further change in the entrance examination system.
