University of Hyderabad gets a School of Economics on its campus

Updated on: Thursday, October 25, 2012

Planning Commission member Abhijit Sen inaugurated the School of Economics at the campus of University of Hyderabad (UoH) here.

Speaking on the occasion, he talked about the internal conflicts that economics as a discipline is in, UoH said a release.

Sen gave an example that while advising the farmers about potential benefits of optimising their farm inputs and labour time, the economists often are guided by the subtle assumptions that all economic agents are rational decision maker and hence they know their interest best.

He said this in contrary to their supposition that farmers are unaware of the opportunities and benefits of optimisation mechanics.

Sen favoured collaboration between experts to address multi-dimensional issues of the day in larger public interest.

Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, Vice-Chancellor of UoH, asked the faculty and students to make this school one of the best in the country in future.
