Hair snipped to teach kids a lesson

Kolkata: Two Class VI girls allegedly had their hair chopped off by a teacher in class for being inattentive.

The incident at Garifa Pallimangal High School in Naihati on Wednesday sparked a furore, with guardians staging a dharna and submitting a deputation to the principal on Thursday. The accused teacher was not present. No police complaint has been lodged as yet.

Parents claimed that maths teacher Sanghamitra Sarkar grew furious when she saw Barnali Das and Papiya Saha adjusting their hair. Calling them inattentive, Sarkar stormed out, returned with a pair of scissors and lopped off their hair as ‘punishment’.
“If the girls were disobeying discipline, the headmaster should have complained to me. We demand action against the teacher at once,” said Sumitra Saha, Papiya’s mother.

“I have received a complaint from guardians. We’ll take up the matter,” said headmaster Bankim Chakraborty.
