SCERT draws up action plan to develop a talented pool of students with mathematical skills

Updated on: Thursday, September 27, 2012

The State Council for Education Research and Training (SCERT) has come up with a five-year action plan to develop a talented pool of students with good enough mathematical skills to participate in national and international competitions, including maths Olympiads, to commemorate the National Year of Mathematics.

Students selected for the programme, Nurturing Mathematical Talents in Schools (NUMATS), will attend a 15-day annual camp each year, but will have to prove themselves each time to qualify for the next camp.

A new batch of students selected from Class VI will enter the programme each year and will train under it until they reach Class X. In all, only 74 students will be chosen for training under NUMATS each year.

SCERT director, K.A. Hashim, says students will be given assignments and projects at each stage. With the first of the NUMATS camps scheduled to be held in April- May, 2013, all state schools have been told to select students by September 30 under phase I. The selection process will be based on tests conducted at sub-district, district and state levels.
