The Allahabad High Court has sought a reply from the Centre on a Public Interest Litigation demanding the setting up of an AIIMS-like institute in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Passing the order, a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Amitava Lala and Justice P K S Baghel fixed September 11 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

The PIL has been filed by Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, a BJP MLA who represents Gorakhpur Urban assembly constituency.

The petitioner has contended that in Gorakhpur and surrounding districts, the spread of encephalitis has been endemic and hence it deserves to have a hospital on par with the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.

Uttar Pradesh government has already approved allotment of land for setting up an AIIMS-like institute in Rae Bareli though it has also raised the demand for similar hospitals in Bundelkhand, Rohilkhand and Poorvanchal (eastern UP) regions.
