School in Thrissur makes Khadi uniform compulsory on wednesday

in Thrissur has thought up an unusual way of fostering nationalist feelings in its students.

At a time when attempts to popularise khadi, the one-time symbol of swaraj, finds few takers, NS High School in Valoor, near Mala in Thrissur has given a boost to the desi fabric by making khadi uniforms compulsory for its 250 students on Wednesdays.

“The objective behind the implementation of the new dress code in our school is to inculcate a sense of patriotism and love for our own culture in the students,” said Deepu N. Mangalam, the school's head master.

The school management purchased the material from the Khadi Central Depot at Avinissery in Thrissur at rebated prices and distributed it to the students in May this year.

“Though the fabric appears less attractive than other varieties, the students have a feeling of entering the classes wearing the nation's pride on their sleeves. The term ‘uniform’ hence serves its purpose,” believes Gireeshan, a teacher.

The school management plans to include its teachers as well in the khadi scheme and extend it to all days of the school week.

“We are now in the process of assessing the material's durability before making it the uniform for every day,” the headmaster said.
