5 year integrated course in Tourism management

The Madurai Kamaraj University is all set to tap the opportunities for students by launching a five-year integrated Masters Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management course on June 6, taking into account the huge job potential available in tourism sector.The course comes with a ‘placement assurance' tag once the student completes the course.

Kalyani Mathivanan, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu on Saturday that the new postgraduate course will be offered in the varsity campus from this academic year.

“I am going to launch the master's degree programme which will tap the opportunities arising out of the rapid growth in the tourism sector. Our university will collaborate with the Tourism Department for this regular course,” she informed. The final year of this 5-year course will be exclusively for internship and field training to students.

“Initially, I was thinking of introducing a course in catering technology. But now we have changed it to tourism and hotel management in view of the vast tourism potential in our State,” the Vice-Chancellor who assumed charge on April 9 said. She said that the integrated course, for which students with a pass in higher secondary course were eligible, would be offered with an assurance of getting placed.

Asked about the progress made with regard to the proposal to establish a high standard film institute in Madurai, Prof. Kalyani Mathivanan said that she was in touch with the right people in the film industry.

“I am in the process of getting things organised for the film institute and specific details will be announced very soon. I met a few film personalities in Chennai recently and the project would take off once the names are decided,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor further said that she visited New Delhi last week to meet top officials connected to the Twelfth Plan funding and the University with Potential for Excellence Scheme of the University Grants Commission. “I met the UGC Chairman Ved Prakash and others during my Delhi visit. It was a courtesy call as I took over as VC of Madurai Kamaraj University only recently.”
