Governor suggests developing IIPM into University

To address the challenges confronting the plantation sector the Governor H.R. Bhardwaj on Saturday suggested developing the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore, into a full-fledged university

He said that there was a need to develop IIPM into a full-fledged university as the industry has played a vital role in the economic development of the country and provided jobs to lakhs of people.

The IIPM is an autonomous organisation promoted by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Many commodity boards are also extending support to it.

In his convocation address of the institute, the governor said the plantation sector had opened up opportunities for employment and export with the entry of agri-business corporations.

Mr. Bhardwaj gave away certificates to 149 students. He presented gold medals in Post-Graduate Diploma in Agri-Business and Plantation Management to Smruthi Shrinivasan of 2009-11 batch and Preeti of 2010-12 batch.

Madhusudhan Prasad, chairman, IIPM, and additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said plantation sector had provided jobs to nearly 20 lakh people and had been contributing significantly to the country's export sector.

IIPM Director V.G. Dhanakumar presented a report on the major achievements of the institute in 2011-12. IIPM students have received offers from many multinational firms such as Olam International – Singapore, Karuturi Global – Ethiopia, Ecom Gil – Switzerland, he said.
