Alumnus of Punjab University offered Dr. manmohan Singh chair

Ajit Singh, professor emeritus at University of Cambridge and an alumnus of Punjab University has been offered the Dr. Manmohan Singh chair.

A committee set up by the varsity Vice-chancellor under the chairmanship of R P Bhambah, has recommended the name of Mr. Singh who is a lifetime fellow at Queen's College in Cambridge.

The recommendation was “unanimously” accepted during the PU syndicate meeting held recently.

The chair was instituted in 2009 in the department of economics and PU had so far not found a suitable candidate for it.

Earlier, PU had extended the same offer to Nobel Prize winner and renowned economist Amartya Sen, who did not accept the offer, according to the spokesman.

Singh had passed out of the PU and started teaching economics at Cambridge in 1965, the spokesman said
