Free education to children of fishermen killed or gone missing

Updated on: Thursday, April 26, 2012

The Tamil Nadu government announced that free education would be provided to the wards of fishermen from the state who had gone missing or were killed mid-sea while fishing.

Fisheries Minister K A Jayapal told the Assembly that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had given this directive after the government had come to know that children of fishermen who had gone missing or were killed mid-sea while fishing had discontinued studies for want of money.

"Government will bear the complete cost involved in undergraduate courses, besides Medicine, Engineering, Veterinary Science and Technical Education," he said.

A fund would be created for this purpose, he added.
