Restriction to start new teacher training institutes

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has ordered 13 state governments, including Tamil Nadu, not to start any new teacher training institutions next academic year.

Large number  of students join teachers training courses (B. Ed, D.Ted, C.P. Ed, D. Ped and B.P. Ed) every year, but many graduates still remain jobless and institutions suffer from  lack of qualified faculties.

'We have more number of teacher training institutes in the country. There is more supply than demand. Many graduates who had pursued this course are jobless now.

We are going to revamp the whole system to facilitate more number of students get better placements with lucrative salaries,' highly placed sources in NCTE told on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Mr Hasib Ahmad, member secretary, NCTE, in a notification to all states, has said that the restriction will not apply in case of minority institutions.

'This step is being taken by NCTE as a temporary measure for regulating the growth of teacher training institutions, pending statewise assessment of the manpower requirement of trained teachers in the country,' he said.

The other states included in the NCTE list are, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
