The government is contemplating to set up the country's first Meta University in Delhi, with four premier varsities coming together to give it shape. The Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said that "HRD plans to set up a Meta University at Delhi in which, Jamia Milia Institute, Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi would participate."

A Meta University will make it possible for an IIT-Kanpur student to also enrol for a course in ancient history from JNU, or a Mathematics student from IISc to pursue a course in comparative literature from Jadavpur University.

It will leverage the national knowledge network programme which already connects major institutes across the country through high-speed fibre-based broadband connectivity.

The Ministry said, the existing capabilities and resources of these institutes will be utilised and no separate funding for these institutions is proposed for this purpose.

She said the institutes will decide on areas of collaboration and identify the courses and areas to be offered through the Meta University.

The areas of climate change, public health and education have been identified in a meeting held with these institutions, to be offered under Meta Universities, she said.

The courses are expected to be offered from next academic session.
