Efforts on to revive Shillong as an education destination

Shillong which has always been known as a seat of education in the north eastern region has lost its sheen over a period

prompting the state government to revive shillong as a premier education destination through investment in that sector.

Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary said,
"Identification of private partners to operationalize three Pine Mount International Schools on a PPP basis has been

initiated. Funding has been provided for setting up residential schools in each block and land is being identified for the

purpose."

The centre has recently sanctioned nine model schools to be started in different areas of Garo Hills. The Governor said, "The

potential to generate employment and provide a boost to the human resources arena will be further explored and tapped." He

further said that the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, is being implemented in the state,and the Sarva

Shiksha Abhiyan programme has been 'dovetailed' with the implementation of the act. Proposals were being finalized to provide

one additional classroom for standalone primary schools. The expenditure to be incurred for training of all untrained

teachers, provision of uniforms and textbooks to all children at the elementary level and provision of special services to

'differently-abled' children, has been assesed and the government will approach the centre to seek assistance.

The Centre has approved deployment of cook-cum-helpers under the mid-day meal programme. The state has approved setting up of

10 private universities. An online management system for merit-cum-means scholarships has been fully operationalized.
