Subject on Vocational Training

State government has identified 16 vocational skills such as carpentry, building construction, electrical work etc. as a life skill which will be introduced from next academic year for Arts and Science graduates and higher secondary school students of state government schools as a subject under the heading 'Vocational training'.

Dr. E.Balagurusamy, Member (Education), State Planning Commission while speaking to the media said that employability is a major factor and due to acute shortage of skilled labour across various sectors the state decided to implement the initiative.He added that plans are to put these initiatives into action at the earliest as education is the major thrust area of the government.

After extensive consultations with industry associations and technical institutes such as ITI a list of 16 skills has been drawn up by the government for the students based on skill shortage in each sector."There are 132 vocational skills that can be imparted. But for now, we have decided only on a select few based on the industry demand," the former Anna University vice-chancellor said.

An industry data that reflected the requirement of 500 million skilled workers in the country by 2022 made both the central and state government to focus on vocational training and skill development. There are over 70 lakh people registered with the employment exchange including three lakh B.E. students who are not in a position to be provided with jobs by the government due to lack of basic vocational skills according to Dr. Balagurusamy.This initiative taken by the government is meant to bridge the gap.

Recently, National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC), set up under Union Ministry of Finance, too announced that it would impart five skills for Haryana middle school students on the Swiss vocational training model on an experimental basis.

"If the experiment was found be successful it would be taken to other States, Mr M.V. Subbiah, Chairman, NSDC said at a CII meet.
NSDC is already in the process of setting up sector skill councils (SSCs) for industries like textile, foundry, food processing, electronics hardware, telecom, construction and real estate, plumbing, agriculture and handicrafts, to address labour shortage. It has already allocated funds worth Rs1150 crore to set up 42 vocational training organizations and 10 SSCs.
