Affiliate Colleges asked to join ICT Network by Madras Varsity

The University of Madras has urged all colleges affiliated to it to get linked to the ICT Network and avail its benefits. The University got connected to the HRD Ministry supported 900 crore National Mission on Education in February 2011.The total cost per year for the college would be Rs one lakh if they join the network, of which Rs 75,000 would be borne by the HRD leaving colleges just 25000 as annual expenditure, it said in a circular.

This Mission through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) network aims to connect educationists and institutions to participate in a nationwide movement, providing and accessing e-content, effect teacher empowerment and adopt effectively e-teaching and e-learning.

The University is also connected to the National Knowledge Network, a National knowledge commission initiative. All this is aimed at providing unlimited access to researchers and students libraries and knowledge resources. It has however left out private colleges which form majority of colleges in the district which meet the needs of over 75 percent of total number of students seeking higher studies.

BSNL has given 1 gbps connectivity to the University for 10 years with 400 node LAN, connecting it to the National Knowledge Network.
