AICTE firm on universities sticking to norms

Updated on: Friday, July 31, 2009

The Council categorically stated to the petition filed by the Association of Management of Private Colleges, Coimbatore that not adhering to the norms, will create dual standards, which will even oppose the common sense.

The petitioner contended that Anna University - Coimbatore was unable to conduct courses other than those that fell under the purview of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Act. The university was giving affiliation to arts and science courses in engineering colleges, which fell under the purview of Bharathiyar University.

Earlier, Anna University-Coimbatore and Bharathiyar University had row over the same issue.
The intention of the state while enacting the Anna University -Coimbatore was not to create a parallel university to Bharathiyar University. Anna University could not give affiliation to engineering courses in the absence of AICTE approval.
By just changing the classification, the university could not permit colleges to run technical courses, the Council said.
