NIT-T forging ahead with tie-ups for R & D

National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) has consolidated its top-ranking position among NITs in the country through tie-ups for research and development with leading industries and front-ranking foreign universities.

The initiatives pertain to academic and research areas involving students and faculty in emerging areas. One such is the MoU with State University of New York on Electronic Packaging.

The institute will be taking a leading role in offering academic and research programmes in this discipline. Recently, a training programme was conducted for faculty members and students by speakers from Georgia Tech University and State University of New York.

Also, NIT-T has received clearance from UKERI, a joint research initiative between the Prime Ministers of India and U.K., for five project areas, creating a national record in bagging the maximum number of projects. One of the projects sanctioned envisages upgrading of skills of personnel in SME sector. “The institute is now rated within India's top 10 technical institutions,” said S. Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T.

Inter-disciplinary activities with industrial applications in areas such as Surface Engineering, Nano Products, and Forensic Failure Analysis are already in place. These activities will lead to setting up of Centres of Excellence which will offer industry-oriented training and certification programmes, and international research studies.

The strategic partnership that NIT-T has entered into with BHEL-Tiruchi for joint R&D and academic improvement would enable the institute to climb up the ladder of industry-oriented research.

Students of NIT will be taking up internship at BHEL and engineers of BHEL will be doing postgraduate and doctoral programmes at NIT. Discussions are also on with Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and other national agencies for collaborative R & D projects.

NIT is proposing to attract scientists through an exclusive laboratory to carry out postgraduate and doctoral research through external registration programme, said Dr. Sundarrajan, a former missile scientist. In addition, a Research Park on the campus was on the anvil to attract national and international companies for exploiting the R&D potential available in the institution, he said.

Having successfully carried out a number of international projects on Energy and Environment with leading faculty members of various departments, the NIT-T would soon start a department of Energy and Environment. Safety and health aspects also will be attached to this department, Dr. Sundarrajan said.
