Updated on: Thursday, July 30, 2009

Chennai: Soon, the city corporation will send text messages (SMS) to parents of children in classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 in its schools every time the students skip classes.

According to a senior official of the civic body, the software, designed for this purpose, obtained from the CSR arm of an IT major for free, has been already installed in the Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam. The entire process would be put to test for a week after which the system would be implemented across all Corporation schools, he added.

The software,  'School Monitoring Software' would also have a database of the students marks scored in their monthly tests and term examinations, that would help monitor their performance. If students performance came down, it would be taken note of by the school authorities and remedial measures initiated.

Nearly 1.27 lakh students study in the over 300 Corporation schools.

Latter, in the days to come, the marks would be made available online and students or their parents could get details from the website.

Mark sheets and transfer certificates could also be obtained easily using the software.

Apart from this, the performance of the schoolteachers would also be monitored with the software. If they don't reach up to the mark, seminars and workshops would be conducted to improve their teaching standard.

To implement the system, the computers available in the schools would be used. Existing staff, including junior assistants and school assistants, would make the entries.
