'Commerce' paths way to Entrepreneurship

Updated on: Thursday, July 30, 2009

Commerce an unoptimized hotcake course , where BCom graduates unseen of their opportunities in several fields ranging from banking and investments to aviation, media and defence

Bachelors in Commerce, the only course in commerce that was available at a undergraduate level until the introduction of Bachelor in Management Studies (BMS). B Com covers business communication, business administration, economics, mathematics and accounts, thus being a perfect launch pad for entrepreneurs and people aspiring to have a career in commerce.

According to Purview Chavez, career counselor, Young buzz, 'Today with the spurt of people opting for MBAs and specialization courses, the demand for a simple B Com has reduced. But the new orders issued by the university to include article ship - that is training programmed along with the course to ensure work experience as well - has helped enhance the quality.'

Paramilitary Debater, an employee with Genetic Call net, a consultancy firm, says, 'Today degrees and certificates are fast losing their importance. Students are opting for BPos as the money in the industry is very attractive. Call centers have processes and once the staff is well acquainted with it he/she can go further in it. For example: WNS (a BPO) specializes in the aviation industry and many employees go ahead to take on the job of cabin crew or ground staff; thus, totally nullifying the value of certificates and claiming that training is important.' This is true by all means. Chavez adds, 'Jobs like fore dealer and capital analyst aren't in the purview of a B Com graduate; but experience and training can help him/her do the job.'

Opportunities in various sectors-

Banking: For a career in banking, one can start off by maintaining accounts. However, to climb up the ladder, one should have to clear an exam conducted by the bank. Within the banking sector itself one can choose from a variety of options like retail personal banking, corporate banking, merchant banking, rural banking, treasury group  and product management and loans to name some.

Investments: If you are looking forward to making it in the investment sector, it is advisable to start off by assisting an investment banker as experience can help further . This is especially true for fore and capital trading, as they need a higher amount of experience. Similarly, if you are looking forward to getting into the stock market, it is only experience that will help as experience will give you the knack of how the market functions. Equity research analyst, investment banker, mutual fund executive, capital market manager, financial planner/ asset manager, venture capitalist, and real estate are some of the other options you could choose from.

Insurance: Insurance is not very different from the investment sector when it comes to experience. Yes, the key to success here is also experience. Insurance offers jobs like actuary, risk management, insurance surveyor, underwriter, etc.

Other fields: Apart from these known 'commerce' fields, you can also try your hand in aviation, travel and tourism, media, defense, medical transcription, secretarial practices, and of course, the booming BPO.

Money matters

According to Chavez, 'The salary of a B Com graduate can range anywhere between Rs 3000 – Rs 5000 in the initial stages and later on increases depending on the training and experience.'Those majoring in banking and insurance, and accounts and finance get higher packages as they have internships as part of their curriculum.
