TN Nursing colleges to reopen on Feb 10

Updated on: Friday, February 03, 2012

The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has decided to reopen all nursing colleges in Tamil Nadu on Feb 10 causing confusion among the students, even after the Madras High Court had ordered the reopening of nursing colleges in the state at the earliest.

Earlier, the court stayed the operation of the state governments order to fill all vacant posts of nurses in government medical institutions from both the government and private nursing institutions through conducting an examination by the Medical Services Recruitment Board.

After a relentless protest from the students side, the medical authorities had declared that the government nursing colleges would be closed for a week from January 25 to January 31.

Previously, the court stated, it is unnecessary for the nursing students to continue their non-cooperation and should return to the schools immediately. It also directed the state government to reopen the nursing schools and colleges so that the academic continuity of the students will not be affected.

However, later the DME said that government nursing schools and colleges would reopen only on Feb 10 as the nurses threatened to continue their protest after the colleges reopened.

Several students who had prepared to come to college on January 31 had to go back home.
