Students told to utilise opportunities

India today is a nation of opportunities for enterprising people with determination and talent and the students are fortunate to live in times, which offer enough opportunities and challenges, observed Padmabhushan S.K. Joshi, former Director General of CSIR.

Delivering the convocation address at the IX Convocation of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal here on Saturday, Prof. Joshi said corruption was found to be the greatest evil of the society today and there was exasperation and anger against it. “You should be part of the efforts to cure the cancer of corruption in our society. Whatever job you get, serve people with utmost honesty and transparency,” he told the students who filled the auditorium.

Prof. Joshi wanted the students to learn to praise and appreciate the contribution of others. Praise enriches the relationship and creates happiness all around. “I found that no experience can match that of working with talented people in an atmosphere full of regard for each other. This is true of all institutions and corporations,” he said.
‘Professionals required'

Sharing his thoughts on higher education in India, Prof. Joshi said the country, which has half a billion young people below the age of 21 would grow much more by 2050. The country needs well-trained professionals to train the young people to make them useful to society.

Prof. Joshi urged the students to realise the meaning of life, importance of simplicity, modesty and character building.

At the convocation, a total of 1,060 students who have passed out during 2010-11 were conferred degrees. Of them, 14 Ph.D. scholars, 355 M.Tech, 172 other post graduate courses and 519 B.Tech students received their degrees.
Honours

Institute Gold Medal winner is Saurav Tiwari of Computer Engineering who scored highest Cumulative Grade Point Average. He also received Roll of Honour Gold Medal in Computer Science and Engineering Department.

The other Roll of Honour Gold Medal winners are as follows, Amit Chandra Sunal of Civil Engineering, Battula Swathi of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Alok Ranjan of Mechanical Engineering, Sreenidhi Govindarajan of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Rohit Kumar of Chemical Engineering, Niharika Gudur of Biotechnology.

NIT Warangal Board of Governors chairman Padmashree professor B.L. Deekshatutlu presided over the function.

Earlier, NIT Director Prof. T. Srinivasa Rao listed out achievements of the institutions and laurels brought by the students at various national and international events.
