PIL to restart process of setting up medical college

Updated on: Thursday, January 19, 2012

The Madras High Court has been moved for a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to restart the process of establishing a government medical college and hospital in Perambalur district, which had allegedly been shelved after the new govt came to power in 2011.

When the petition by an advocate came up before the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, it was posted for hearing after four weeks to enable the government to file a counter affidavit.

In the PIL, advocate M Palanimuthu submitted that the former TN government had allocated Rs 100 crore in the 2010-11 state budget for the project at Kunnam.

After land for the institution had been acquired and tenders floated in February-March last year for construction of the college building, hospital and other facilities, no further development had taken place after the new government had assumed office, he claimed, adding, he had come to know that government had dropped the plan.

He said it was not fair on the part of government, which had been elected by the public, to put off or cancel any project merely because it was initiated during the fomer government. He said he had sent a representation to the authorities concerned on January 3 to restart the process of setting up the institution.
