New president for Indian Society for Technical Education

The Vice-Chancellor of Anna University of Technology, Madurai, R.Murugesan has been elected as the president of Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi, for 2012 to 2014.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Dr. Murugesan said the election for the post was held during the 41 ISTE Annual National Convention hosted by Baba Bandha Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab on December 16, 2011. Dr.Murugesan now joins the elite group of G.R.Damodaran and V.C. Kulandaisamy by becoming the third person from the state to hold that position after a gap of 15 years.
15th president

He is also the 15th president of the society.

The late Dr. Damodaran, who served as the Director of PSG Group of Institutions in Coimbatore had held the post from 1974 to 1975. V.C.Kulandaiswamy who served as Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and Indira Gandhi National Open University served as president of ITSE for two terms from 1993 till 1996.

ITSE has an executive council at the national level; it has an active membership of more than 80,000 technical teachers, 4.3 lakh student members, more than 2058 institutional members, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and National Institute of Technology and other leading technical institutions.
1,022 faculty chapters

There are about 1,022 faculty chapters and 1,124 students' chapters throughout the country.

When asked about the issues that he would look into after assuming the post, he said that at certain states they are yet to implement the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, so we will look into that issue and take it up with the Ministry of Human Resources Development.
Convention

Dr. Murugesan also said that ISTE is planning to have its convention during the months of March and April where they would be selecting members for the posts of vice-president and treasurer.

Among its future plans, ISTE has plans to have distance education mode of technical education through e-learning, to establish a technical education national Staff College, to create a national database on technical education system and develop mechanism for periodic professional refinement of faculty members.
