HC issues notices to GU

Ahmedabad: After Gujarat High Court asked state education department, Medical Council of India (MCI) and other authorities to accommodate students of Valia Medical College in other colleges following its derecognition last year, students of Kesar Sal Medical College have now approached the court seeking a similar arrangement.City-based Kesar Sal Medical College, a self-financed college run by a charitable trust-Adarsh Foundation, has been derecognised by Medical Council of India, since 2007. This allegedly happened after the college failed to provide the infrastructure required under laws. Hence, students were not enrolled after that. However, the college functioned for three years and the present total strength of students is 300.

Future of students of three batches hangs in balance. Ultimately, around 200 students filed a petition in the high court, urging the court to direct various authorities including the state government and Centre to transfer them to other medical colleges that are having affiliation with the Gujarat University.

Arguing for the students, their counsels Mihir Thakore and Tejas Barot stated that the first batch of 81 students have already completed their MBBS this year, and are now required to undergo internship training in the attached hospital.

But, the provisional eligibility of Sal Hospital to impart training is subject to the status of the college. Hence, if they are not shifted to a recognised college, the question regarding validity of their internship would arise. This might jeopardise the process of conferment of degree upon them.

The advocates also contended that while permitting the college to enrol students, the state government, as per the norms, had given essentiality certificate to the college. This means, the state government is bound to take over the responsibility of students admitted in this college.

Expressing apprehension that college authorities might not get further recognition from MCI and state government, students have requested court to accommodate them to some other Gujarat University colleges so that they can pursue their studies further.

After hearing the students, a division Bench of Chief Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Akil Kureshi issued notices to nine parties, including Centre, state government, Gujarat University, medical college and concerned secretaries. Further hearing in this case will take place on March 30.
