Berhampur: The 139 year-old Khallikote autonomous college here is facing shortage of teachers with only 47 of them for its 3600 students.

The crisis is likely to deepen as at least eight teachers are scheduled to retire from service during this year, college principal Ghanashayam Lenka said.

The premier institute has 88 posts of teaching staff but due to the paucity the departments of Telugu and computer science have no teachers, while several other departments are functioning with just one or two.

The only teacher of the Telugu department retired last year, while in the computer science department the government has sanctioned the post of lecturer, the posting is yet to take place, Lenka said.

"We are managing the classes by inviting guest faculties. We have written to the government to fill up the vacancies," he said adding despite the shortage of staff, the college is trying to maintain its past academic glory.

The state government has sanctioned the opening of post-graduate course in education and M.Phil in zoology from this academic year with 16 and 8 seats respectively, he said.

Established in 1878, the institute was selected as 'college of excellence in potential' by UGC and given star mark by the department of biotechnology of the central government.
