Reopening of schools in Puducherry put off

Updated on: Wednesday, January 04, 2012

Puducherry administration has postponed the date of reopening of government schools to January 18 as the water and drinking water supply, hit by cyclone, was yet to be restored in full scale.

Director of school Education E Vallavan said in a release here originally the schools were scheduled to reopen tomorrow but still more time was needed for restoring the water and power supply. Removal of trees that had fallen in the premises or on the school buildings would also involve some more days.

He said that date of reopening of the privately managed schools here has also been postponed to January 9 instead of tomorrow as announced earlier.

In most parts of Puducherry region school buildings were also used as relief centres and till normalcy returned the people hit by cyclone would have to be accommodated in schools, official sources told.
