Recognising the contribution of teachers

Teachers shoulder the responsibility of moulding a generation. It is every teacher's duty to go beyond the textbook and educate students on different aspects of life. A teacher should be a friend, guide and a philosopher for students, said S. Buvaneshwari, headmistress, VLB Government Aided Girls School, Kovaipudur, here on Monday.

She was delivering the acceptance speech at the Round Table 20 Excellence in Education Awards Function, organised by Coimbatore North Round Table 20 (RT20) as part of Coimbatore Vizha.

Ms. Buvaneshwari was selected as the best headmistress from among 87 heads of the Government and Government-aided schools in the district.

The award was instituted as part of the ‘Freedom Through Education' initiative undertaken by Round Table India (RTI) across the country.

According to B. Praveen Kumar, event convener, the candidate was selected after analysing individual merits as well as the achievements of the school in academic and extra-curricular fields. Ten candidates were shortlisted with the help of the District Education Department, he said.

The award would help motivate teachers and improve student-teacher relationship in schools in the district, the organisers said.

Ms. Buvaneshwari, who started her teaching career in 1982, took charge as the headmistress of the school in 2008. The school had set a model by achieving 100 per cent results in the Board exams for the last 15 years.

She had also received the Best Teacher Motivator Award from the District Education Department.

Dr. Anand Kumar, Chairman of RT20, said that the award honoured the head of the school who happened to be a true administrator, motivator, mentor and an academician par excellence.

K. Illango, guest of honour at the event and Chairman T.I.E, past president of CODISSIA and RTI, said that the RTI had undertaken successful projects in the city such as development initiatives in rural areas, building water tanks and strengthening the infrastructure of schools.

S. Ramesh, chief guest and chairman Area 7, RTI, and Dipender Singh, Chairman of Coimbatore Vizha, also spoke.

According to the members, as part of the Freedom Through Education, RTI had built 1,400 schools benefitting 7.5 lakh children in the country. RT20's current projects, that cost Rs.40 lakh, included construction of classrooms at Veerapandipudur Government School, Thoppampatti Government School and renovation of classrooms in Vellalore High School.
