Courses in Tourism, Travel and Hospitality (TTH) along with programmes in Eco-Tourism, Sustainability in Environment, Disaster Mitigation and Management have become popular as there are opportunities in many dimensions. In the process, many institutions have become popular with the learners.

I want to pursue a dairy technology course after +2. Please guide me. My parents are a little apprehensive about the programme and its scope. I am presently in first PUC.

The Veterinary College, Bangalore, which functions under the aegis of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (Bidar) (www.kvafsu.kar.nic.in), conducts the four-year Bachelor of Technology (Dairy Technology) flagship programme that has attracted many. For more details, you should connect to the Veterinary College, Bellary Road, Bangalore.

For the general readers, the programme in dairy technology focuses on management and development in the sector. The White Revolution (Operation Flood), a rural development programme launched by the National Diary Development Board (NDDB) in 1970, helped usher in professionalism in the field of cooperatives.

There are ample opportunities for the students of dairy technology and management and one can confidently say jobs will be there for the asking. Today, one can see a more organised sector that has helped farmers break into the big league and ensure quality economics. You can be part of the revolution.

I am a student of Plus Two (Delhi Board/ISC) and I want to become a physicist. I am presently in Chennai, where my father is in a government job. Next year, we will be moving to Bangalore and hence request you to provide information on the institutions in Bangalore. I would like to go through the engineering curriculum. Please suggest a good course in engineering that would help me make a career in research in Pure Physics or Atomic Physics. What are the choices that students like me have?

via e-mail, Bangalore

Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena spanning all length scales: from the sub-atomic particles from which ordinary matter is made (particle physics) to the behaviour of the material universe as a whole (cosmology). There are numerous branches of physics and each has its corresponding specialists.

The undergraduate curriculum generally includes the following range of courses viz., Theoretical Physics, Astronomy, Electricity, Optics, Quantum Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics. At a later stage you can specialise in the areas of Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics, Bio Physics, Chemical Physics, Geo Physics, Material Science, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, and Plasma Physics, to identify a few areas.

At the engineering level (viz., Bachelor of Technology or Engineering) the universities do not have programmes that focus on Physics but have a compulsory paper that will take you through the basics.

Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore-560 012 (www.physics.iisc.ernet.in) Bangalore, is a wonderful place to be in for the area of Physics.

You can pursue the Integrated programme leading to Ph.D. after graduation. You can contact the Chairman of the Department at Ph: 2293 2315. E-mail: [email protected]

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) (www.jncasr.ac.in) is another place that is worth considering. You should contact the Coordinator, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore-560064. E-mail: [email protected]

Many feared that the study of pure sciences has come to halt because of the applied sciences viz., Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, and other areas of specialisation. Students like you would help rekindle the need for pure sciences as a discipline.

I am a student of engineering (electrical and electronics) in a reputed autonomous institution (deemed university). I have just finished my fourth semester exams and my marks so far have been quite good. My overall CGPA is very good. I am a little confused about applying the knowledge learnt during the engineering programme. Hence, to gain further experience, I would like to pursue internship after every two semesters during the vacations. I want to know what is the criterion for selection to the internship programmes.

via e-mail

Your eagerness to pursue internship is laudable. However, considering that you have just completed the second semester, there may not any organisation willing to accommodate you on account of the requirements and eligibilities of an intern.

Besides, you will not be able to contribute much to the organization as the knowledge and information that you possess will be limited. You can consult the placement cell of your college/institute and get information about the internship programmes.

For engineering graduates the internships are organised towards the seventh semester, which will ensure placements. Hence, from a policy perspective of the college/institute the authorities will not entertain the request. It is however, good that you are driven by the enthusiasm to learn and unlearn from the corporate world; stay focused on the academics (you are scoring well at this point in time, keep up the tempo) and opportunities will come your way.
