Second career internship

The Tata Group has announced the launch of the fourth edition of Tata Second Career Internship Programme (SCIP) to provide a platform to women on a career break to return to the corporate sector. This year, the application process is ‘ongoing-online'.

Aspirants can log onto www.tatasecondcareer.com to view, select and apply for ‘live business projects', online, throughout the year, just like any other job portal.

The website has received more than 20,000 hits within a week, with around 1,770 registrations from cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Chennai. Projects with various Tata Group companies are on the offer, spanning multiple expertise domain areas such as marketing, sales, advertising/communications, human resource management, finance/accounting, legal, manufacturing, engineering, design, and IT.

As part of the programme, the selected candidates will get the opportunity to work on a ‘live' business project offered by the Tata Group of companies with approximately 500 hours of engagement.

This will be spread over six months on a flexi-time basis. Individuals are provided with project fees of Rs.3 lakh-Rs. 4 lakh and a work certificate.

SCIP is open for women who have a professional qualification in management / accountancy / law / IT / design or engineering, have a minimum of four years of work experience and who have taken a minimum of one year or a maximum of eight years' break in their career for personal commitments.

SCIP projects will be allotted based on the area of expertise of the woman applicant after a rigorous selection process. Applicants can visit the SCIP portal (www.tatasecondcareer.com) for further details on projects, applications and selection procedures.
Analytics Day

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore (NMIMS), celebrated the Analytics Day recently, with the active participation of many corporates such as Dell, Fidelity, TCS, Accenture and IBM.

Suresh Mony, Director, NMIMS, Bangalore commenced the day's proceedings with an overview of the evolution of analytics, highlighted some typical applications that use analytics extensively and threw open issues for deliberation.

A panel discussion was held on “Lies, Damned Lies and Analytics” by a group comprising mathematician N. Jayasankaran, Advisor, NMIMS University, and practitioners from Dell, Fidelity, TCS and Accenture. The panellists concluded that data does not lie but what often happens is that improper use of data gives false, misleading results.

Some case studies were presented by senior analytics executives from Dell, IBM, Accenture, Mu Sigma, and Kavaii. These included reducing crime rate, marketing mix for healthcare insurance, and enhancing sales for theatre entertainment groups.

Deep Thomas, Vice-President, HSBC, said that despite insights drawn from analytics, if these are not used and human greed or inaction prevails, analytics often ends up becoming a hype for no fault of the discipline. K. Sriram, consulting actuary, delivered a speech on actuarial analytics and its application on insurance.

The day's deliberations concluded with the student case study presentations on given business problems. Two student teams from the MPE and EPGDBM programmes at NMIMS, Bangalore, won the first and second prizes respectively.
