EGS teachers hold parleys with CM, protest continues

The Education Guarantee Scheme(EGS) teachers, who are demanding regularisation of their services, today held parleys with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at Chak Fatehsingh Wala village in Bathinda district.

Members of the EGS Teachers Association are demonstrating at Husnar chowk adjacent to the civil court at Gidderbaha since November 29 demanding regularisation of their services by the state government.

Also, a group of six EGS teachers, including four women, are camping atop a water tank at Husnar village in Gidderbaha constituency for the fourth successive day today, EGS teachers association President Pritpal Singh said.

The group of six teachers are on a fast-unto-death on the water tank even as district administration officials failed to mollify them. The EGS teachers held talks with the Chief Minister during his sangat darshan programme today, Singh said.

Badal has assured them that their issue would be resolved in a meeting with them at Chandigarh tomorrow, he said. "But it appears to be mere assurance by the Chief Minister... our protest will continue till we get something in writing from him on the issue," he said.

With a few days to go before the imposition of the election code of conduct in Punjab as Assembly polls are due early next year, teachers are trying their best to put pressure on the state government for a favourable consideration to their demand.

The EGS teachers protest hogged the limelight after one of their lady members was slapped in public by a village head recently. The sarpanch was booked by police. He was later bailed out.
