Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the Board of Secondary Education, Assam, (Seba) should launch a website soon so that people could easily check old data and records. He also announced that from this session onwards, Seba should bring out a list of 50 best schools whose overall performance in the HSLC (matric) examination is good. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of the SEBA. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi was also present at the meeting.

Sarma said, "The government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 1 crore to start a website soon and a list of 50 best schools whose overall performance is good in the HSLC examination should be made. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has also been instructed to bring out a list of 50 best colleges in the higher secondary exams."

Besides, Sarma stressed on the need of introducing vocational education in the school curriculum. From the next session, the National Vocational Educational Qualification Framework (NVEQF) would be included from class 9 onwards, so that the student can decide whether to continue in academics or vocational, and if he decides to shift his preference to academics, there would be a provision of horizontal mobility.

"The certificates issued to students of both the streams would hold the same value." Sarma added.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who was also present in the meeting, said "Education should help young men find employment, and more industrialization should take place. A lot of new subjects have been introduced in the curriculum, like tourism, floriculture, horticulture and food industry. These have great prospect and students should explore them."

He also added, "The system of education should be interesting and simplified so that students can enjoy it. Soon the government would introduce more educational schemes for the students."

SEBA chairman Shantikam Hazarika and secretary L N Sarma were also present there with other SEBA officials.
