Tributes paid to Subramania Bharathiar

Puduchery Assembly Speaker V Sabapathy accompanied by Local Administration Minister N G Panneerselvam and legislators today paid floral tributes at the statue of nationalist poet Subramania Bharathiar on the occasion of celebrations of his 130th birth anniversary here.  

Delegates of different literary associations, Tamil organizations and writers and scholars paid tributes at the statue.
 
Special programmes were held on the premises of Puducherry Tamizh Sangam on the occasion.
 
Poet Bharathiar had political asylum in Puducherry for ten long years from 1908 when Puducherry was under the French rule.
  
A part of the the poet's house here was acquired in 1973. The house has since been converted into a memorial and museum.
 
However the museum remains closed for last two years triggering protest from Tamil scholars and writers.
