The Tamil Nadu government said children belonging to over 21,000 Sri Lankan refugee families staying in the state would be accommodated in state-run student hostels to enable them to pursue education without difficulty.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has directed that more than 12,000 additional vacancies should be made in hostels meant for SC, ST students and those run by BC, MBC and Minorities Welfare Department, a state government release said.

The chief minister had allocated about Rs seven crore for this purpose and the decision was made after it came to her notice that these students faced difficulty in commuting to schools and colleges, it said.
