Know the emerging programmes like Geo-Technical Engineering and Rural Management, which has a good future, as encouraged by Government of India. This week Deccan Chronicle-Education provides details on this study.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Product designers are responsible for giving form, function and meaning to a range of products that furnish our everyday lives. Their creative and practical input provides the essential link between the consumer and the manufacturer. Product Design is for people who love to know how things work, who love to create things and who want to influence the world around them.
The role of the designer is a vital factor in the successful development of all manufactured products. As a result, there is a growing demand for capable, professional designers who can embrace visual and ergonomic studies with a competent application of technology - to create viable products. All types of products that, although they may be dramatically different in purpose, share design aspects surround us in common: functionality; interaction with the user; a visual three-dimensional existence; materials and processes in their manufacture.
The product design course covers mainly design drawing, elements of design, colour, ergonomics, materials and methods and design process. Project work includes simple product designing, techno aesthetic detailing, system design, etc.
Product design graduates are highly regarded; and have excellent job opportunities. Many find positions with prominent manufacturers; whilst others go on to establish their own consultancies.
In Tamil Nadu, D.J. Academy of design Coimbatore offers 2 years professional programme in product design.
GEO-TECHNICAL
Geo-Technical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behaviour of earth materials. Geo-Technical engineering includes investigating existing subsurface conditions and materials; assessing risks posed by site conditions; designing earthworks and structure foundations; and monitoring site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction.
A typical geo-Technical engineering project begins with a site investigation of soil and bedrock on and below an area of interest to determine their engineering properties including how they will interact with, on or in a proposed construction. Site investigations are needed to gain an understanding of the area in or on which the engineering will take place. Investigations can include the assessment of the risk to humans, property and the environment from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flows and rock falls.
A geo-Technical engineer then determines and designs the type of foundations, earthworks, and/or pavement sub grades required for the intended man-made structures to be built. Foundations are designed and constructed for structures of various sizes such as high-rise buildings, bridges, medium to large commercial buildings, and smaller structures where the soil conditions do not allow code-based design.
The field of geo-Technical engineering is a specialty of engineering, where the field of engineering geology is a specialty of geology.
In short Geo-Technical engineering is a science that deals with the application of geology to engineering
Geo-Technical Engineering work involves the application of soil and rock mechanics as well as engineering geology to solve engineering problems such as design of foundations, slopes, excavations, dams, tunnels and other Civil, Mining and Environmental engineering projects relating to the mechanical response of the ground, and the water within. Geo-Technical engineering has got tremendous job opportunities.
IIT Guwathi offers M.Tech programme in geo technical engineering.
RURAL MANAGEMENT
Rural management is the specialised function required for rural enterprises, especially producers'' co-operatives with modern processing units. Rural management experts can help these units and enterprises to market consumer goods. They also help to set up rural enterprises, to realise the untapped potential in rural areas of the country.
Rural development projects addressing the needs of specific groups of people and geographic regions, as well as those of individual commodities, are being implemented all over the country. Some of the examples, which can be listed in this aspect, are the Revolution flood/operation flood, Green revolution. All these are due to sustained rural development actions. Given the magnitude of our rural population the Government of India has worked up to the fact that proper rural development will yield good income prospects. Therefore, the government is encouraging the professionals to set up industry and development process in rural areas. Apart from the Government of India many voluntary agencies and private companies are also supporting rural development and rural management. Professional management, firmly grounded in the realities and nuances of rural problems, is expected to extend the base of development activities in the rural segment.
The main work for a rural management professional is: Planning systematic development of the region where he/she is working.
Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA), and Gujarat is a unique institution in the sense that it provides professional education to train managers for rural management.
The 2-year full time programme prepares candidates for challenging managerial responsibilities in the rural co-operative sector and development organisations. Candidate seeking admission to the programme must be a graduate with a minimum aggregate of 50%. Selection procedure consists of a written test, group discussion and personal interview. Candidates selected on the basis of the written test are called for group discussions and personal interviews.
GENETIC ENGINEERING
Genetic engineering have specializations related to plants, animals and human beings. Genetic engineering in plants and animals may be to improve certain natural characteristics of value, to increase resistance to disease or damage and to develop new characteristics etc. It is used to change the colour, size, texture etc of plants otherwise known as GM (Genetically Modified) foods. Genetic engineering in humans can be to correct severe hereditary defects by introducing normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones.
Genetic engineers are mainly absorbed in medical and pharmaceutical industries, the agricultural sector, and the research and development departments of the government and private sectors. SRM university offers B.Tech in genetic engineering.
