Mysore: Free pre-university education for road race winner

Vidya Vikas Educational Institution will provide free pre-university education to MS Gajendra, who came first in the boys' inter-high school road race competition conducted by Challengers Athletic Club at the University of Mysore athletic ground here on Saturday. Every year, over 15 students both from schools and colleges are given free education at the institution. A few months ago, Dhruthi T Venugopal, a promising tennis player from Mysore, who is also a student of the institution, was honored with a cash prize.

Kavish Gowda, secretary of Vidya Vikas Educational Institution, who was one of the guests during the prize distribution function, was overwhelmed with Gajendra's performance and as a token of appreciation has come forward to provide him with a free Pre-University education. The institution offers high school and Pre University education and also various UG, PG and diploma courses. The institution also encourages outstanding sportspersons by honoring them with cash prizes.

"I heard that Gajendra is very studious and also good at sports. So, to encourage him I decided to offer him free education at our institution. He can chose either science or arts stream," added Kavish Gowda. Two students from Kudremala, a rural area, were also given free education in MCom and MSW. "We have been giving free education since we started the institution and we will continue to do so in the days to come. We are always there to help the needy, especially those coming from rural areas," added Kavish.

"This is a good gesture from Kavish Gowda and is a good development. I hope more private institutions will follow the example of Vidya Vikas Educational Institution in the coming days," said C Krishna, director, department of physical education, University of Mysore.

Srikanth, organizing secretary, Challengers Athletic Club, was overwhelmed with Kavish Gowda's gesture He said: "I felt really great when Kavish came out with this offer. It will motivate other participants to take up sports seriously and increase the number of participants in the competition. Rural students are always deprived of basic facilities. If they are encouraged, then we will we come across more talented sportspersons," said Srikanth.

MS Gajendra, a Class X student at the Government High School, Yelwala, said: "I am very happy about the offer given by Kavish Gowda. In the coming days, I will strive hard to keep up my expectation and bring more laurels to my school, colleges and also to my place (Yelwala)." Gajendra's physical education teacher and school staff, including vice-principal Vardaraju are excited with the offer given by Kavish Gowda.

Kavish Gowda is the son of Vasu, former Mayor and senior Congress leader who is the chairman of the institution. Vasu is the man behind all these developments. He has also lent a helping hand in conducting various sports and other events in Mysore.
