Litterateurs move HC against closure of schools

Updated on: Monday, December 05, 2011

Three noted litterateurs in Karnataka filed a Public Interest Litigation in the state High Court challenging a recent order directing closure of government schools which have less than five students and their merger with other educational institutions.

Playwright Girish Karnad, Jnananapith awardee Chandrasekhar Kambar and renowned poet G S Shivarudrappa in their PIL contended that the order passed two months ago was "against the Right to Education Act".

It would adversely affect Kannada students belonging to poor families, they submitted.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing next week.
