Online application of IIT-JEE: Students fret over landline

Updated on: Monday, December 05, 2011

The online application for IIT-JEE has been rejecting forms for want of a landline telephone number in addition to a mobile number. Students are perplexed as not all of them have landlines.

The online application system commenced on October 31, and the due date for completion of formalities is December 10.

Students and parents find IIT-JEE’s decision to include a landline number “ridiculous,” at a time when most people have given up their telephones for mobile connections. The parents urged officials to make the provision of landline number optional.

Two separate columns in the application form ask for a mobile number and a landline number respectively. It is mandatory to fill all the columns before submitting the form.

Some students are providing the landline numbers of their friends and relatives, or parents’ office landline numbers to solve the problem. “There is no point in asking for a landline number when there is already a provision for a mobile number,” said D. Srikanth, a IIT-JEE aspirant.
