NCC to revise its training curriculum

Updated on: Thursday, December 01, 2011

The National Cadet Corps, which imparts basic military training to students, is considering revision of its training curriculum to include more personality development aspects.

"We are looking towards revision of the training curriculum, because the earlier one was based on our objective of encouraging children towards the army. Today, our goals have changed and so have the aspirations of students, parents and teachers," NCC's Director General Lt Gen P S Bhalla said here.

"So far our emphasis has been on military subjects. This will be reduced to create more space for personality development, which will include improvement in communication skills, information technology and basic knowledge of other fields," he said.

Keeping in line with this change, the NCC is planning to build an academy in each of the 95 group headquarters in the country, where a student would be trained for 3-4 days, said Bhalla, who is on his first visit to Gujarat after taking charge in February.

Explaining the rationale behind the change in curriculum, Bhalla said that while military values helped inculcate discipline in students, most of them lacked basic communication skills.

"Communication skill here means the ability to openly talk and discuss, which will help the child gain confidence and enable him or her to be independent" he said.

Bhalla said that the organisation was also mulling raising three battalions and one group headquarter in Gujarat.

"The new group headquarter would come up in Bhavnagar district, while the three battalions would be in Palanpur, Amreli and Dahod," he said.

Gujarat currently has four NCC group headquarters in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Vallabh Vidhyanagar in Kheda district.
