The proposed sports university in the state will have a tie-up with a counterpart in China, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said here.

Speaking after inauguration of `Khel Mahakumbh' at M S University pavilion ground, Modi said, "During my recent visit, I discussed this issue with the Chinese officials and they were very keen about tie-up." Modi had led a delegation to China earlier this month.

Khel Mahakumbh is a sports event organised as part of the state's golden jubilee year celebrations. Over 22 lakh youths are taking part in it this year, 7.2 lakh more than last year, Modi claimed in his speech.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar led the torch-run at the event, before handing the torch to Modi at the venue.

Saying that beach-sports would be promoted to attract tourists, Modi said, "Gujaratis are businessmen, and they know how to earn money by promoting tourism through sports.

"It is regrettable that we, a nation of 120 crore people, can not win medals at the international sporting events," Modi said.

Khel Mahakumbh had set up a world record as 27,000 teams from the state have been taking part in the kabaddi tournaments, Modi claimed.

Speaking on the occasion, Akshay praised Modi for promoting sports, and encouraging the disabled to participate.
