Gujarat University: Colleges to work overtime during 1st semester exams

Updated on: Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Gujarat University will conduct the first semester exams from Wednesday for first year BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, and BCA students. This is the first time semester exams are being conducted for these courses after the implementation of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

Interestingly, the GU officials have directed the colleges to ensure that they conduct classes for second year and third year students so that the fifteen day exam schedule does not eat into the teaching time for these students.

"We have directed colleges to hold classes before and after the first year exams are conducted to ensure that syllabus of second and third year students is completed and their studies do not suffer due to the introduction of semester system," GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi said.

Teachers and students had expressed apprehension that fifteen days exam schedule in each semester would eat into teaching time and syllabus may not be completed in time.

GU officials have directed that 26 colleges where the exam will be conducted in one shift, from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm, can hold classes either early in morning or in the afternoon once the exam is over. "These colleges will hold exams in one shift and have been directed to hold classes before or after that," Trivedi said.

VC said that nearly 46 colleges will conduct the exam in two shifts and have been asked to give holiday of seven days to students. These colleges have been asked to hold classes during Sundays.
