Bharathidasan University has bagged ‘Best Usage Award' among Indian universities for 2010 from Springer eBooks and e-Journals, with 1,91,000 downloads of Springer content.

The university was rated first among 270 universities. Vice-Chancellor K.Meena received the award from Springer representative Dharmaendra Gussain, Senior Licensing Manager, earlier this month.

Springer Science + Business Media is a leading global scientific publisher, delivering scholarly content through innovative products and services.

In the STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) sector, the group has the largest collection across the globe, publishing about 2,000 journals and 7,000 new books,

On its part, the university has been developing digital content for the university library.

Use of digital content, according to Srinivasa Raghavan, university librarian, is a development of high significance in the library's growth. The library, he said, has a key role in highlighting importance of information literacy to users.

Dr.Meena said the university library was improving information environment, particularly in providing access to e-resources in the university area.

Following a communication sent to principals and librarians of university-affiliated aided and government colleges for familiarising UGC-Infonet and N.List resources, 16 colleges were connected.

Recently, the Ministry of Human Resource Development and UGC had extended the N.List (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content) facility to all colleges of arts and science, and education.

The facility will provide access to 75,000 e-books of P.G. and research level text and reference, besides 3,000 scholarly journals of research importance from reputed national and international publishers for an annual fee of Rs.5,000.

To familiarise N.LIST among colleges, the university has planned to organise awareness-cum-training programme next month in collaboration with INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network), Ahmedabad, for faculty members, librarians and research scholars.
