TN careful about 'Uniform School Education System'

Chennai: Although the TN Govt has taken a policy decision to implement a uniform school education system, the state would be cautious to avoid adverse effects, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said.

'When we plan for major changes in the education system, we have to take into consideration the interests of lakhs of students to ensure that it does not affect any section,' he said.

The Chief Minister said there were four streams in the high school system and 82 per cent of the students were enrolled in schools that followed the State board syllabus. Sixteen per cent were in matriculation stream and a small per cent of students attended schools that followed Anglo Indian and Oriental syllabus.

He said a uniform school education system was not in place in any of the States, including Kerala and West Bengal.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the former Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University S. Muthukumaran headed a committee to examine the possibility of bringing in uniform syllabus standards had submitted a report about it. Following which, the government appointed retired IAS officer M.P. Vijayakumar to study the recommendations and advise it about the implementation.

The committee had visited various States to study the syllabus and examination patterns and the government had taken steps to implement the uniform syllabus.
